Airline responsibility
The airline is responsible for ensuring that their passengers have the correct documentation before departure. Therefore, you will be denied boarding if your documentation is not in order. Several countries also require you to have a return ticket upon entry, and some countries may require a visa even during a layover.
You can only get emergency passports at these airports
If you discover that your passport has expired or is missing, an emergency passport may be an option. An emergency passport is a temporary document that you can apply for at the police. Please note that not all countries accept emergency passports. Emergency passports can be issued at Oslo Airport, Stavanger Airport, and Bergen Airport. politiet.noESTA – Entry Authorisation for the USA
Norwegians travelling to the United States must have a valid passport and an approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). You must apply for ESTA before departure via the official US government website. If you are unsure which documents are required, contact your airline. From 2 April 2025, Norwegian citizens must have a digital travel authorisation (ETA) when travelling to the United Kingdom. This applies both for direct entry and for transit. You apply for ETA via the official UK government website. Read more on the government's travel information website.
regjeringen.noEntry/Exit System (EES)
The EU has introduced a new border control system called Entry/Exit (EES). It applies to travellers from countries outside the EU/EEA and registers passport and biometric data when entering and leaving the Schengen area. The goal is to make border checks more efficient and prevent illegal stays. Norwegian and other EU/EEA citizens are not affected by the system.
