Stavanger Airport, Sola – the home of Norwegian oil
Stavanger Airport, Sola is located in Sola Municipality, only a short distance from centre of Stavanger and Sandnes. Stavanger Airport is important for businesses in the region, including the energy industry, which uses the separate helicopter terminal and makes up a significant proportion of passengers.
Traditionally, Stavanger Airport has been regarded as a business airport. However over time, leisure travellers have become the majority of passengers. Around 330,000 people live within an hour of the airport and around 660,000 within three hours. The region has been experiencing high levels of population growth, and has the highest proportion of foreign citizens with around 20 percent of the inhabitants being foreigners.
The goal of Stavanger Airport is to fulfil Avinor’s corporate social responsibility through a broad route offering, and a good strategic route network for the people and businesses of the region, where tourism is growing in importance.
Stavanger Airport is often the first point of contact with the Stavanger region, and the airport should reflect this. Sense-of-place and customer experience are prioritised throughout the entire terminal; this can be seen in everything from the local architecture for shops, the use of local furniture and décor, inspired by the North Sea and Norway’s longest beaches, right the way to agriculture. From tower to terminal, you will discover small and large pieces of art in association with one of the world’s largest street art festivals, Nuart. Rogaland is known as an agricultural county, for its good climatic conditions and long traditions – Norway in a nutshell. 80% of Norwegian tomato production takes place in Rogaland. This is shown through the greenhouse in the terminal, where tomatoes are grown and pollinated by bumblebees. The tomatoes are can be tasted and used by the restaurants at Sola as ingredients.
For a number of years, Sola has produced honey that is sold and served as a part of the menus in the terminal. There are a range of major national events that take place in the region, such as ONS, which is the Stavanger oil festival, Norway Chess, Blinkfestivalen and the Russ meeting in Kongeparken, which is also reflected in the terminal in order to promote events and create a regional passenger experience.
Rogaland and Stavanger is known as an agricultural region, oil county and a region full of experiences. This is reflected in many areas – from its nature to it architecture, industries, design, art, culture, activities, products, food and drink.
